Questions and Answers
1) What is cohousing?
Cohousing communities are cooperative neighborhoods designed and
developed by their residents. Individual, self-sufficient homes are
clustered around a Common House with facilities like a dining room,
large kitchen, children's playroom, and library. Parking is typically
in lots rather than individual driveways, and homes are linked with
pedestrian walkways. Most cohousing communities share 2 or 3 meals a
week in the Common House, as well as other community projects and
celebrations. Decisions are made by consensus, with a focus on shared
resources and respectful communication. Cohousing originated in
Denmark more than 20 years ago, and was brought to the U.S. in 1988
by Kathryn McCamant and Charles Durrett of Berkely, California.
Cohousing has been called "the 50s neighborhood of the modern day,"
with its focus on knowing one's neighbors and providing a safe and
nurturing environment for children. Many residents of cohousing point
to the daily contact with their neighbors as providing a
connectedness, continuity and quality of life often lacking in
today's busy, disjointed, and isolating lifestyles.
2) What is your development schedule and timeline?
We are done building! From February through May, 2002, we made the majority of site
plan decisions. In Fall of 2002, we received preliminary approval of
our building permits and in Fall of 2003 we received final approval and the initial roadwork began. We began building our homes in early 2004. As of August 2006, all families have moved in and we are just about done with the common house.
3) Does Rocky Hill have an associate members policy?
At present we have one category of associate membership, though in the future there will likely be additional ways to become an associate member. Currently, associate membership is available to those who wish to purchase lots and build houses on the road leading into the community. Privileges of associate members will include use of common facilities and grounds, and full participation in community life. For those who are interested in living adjacent to Rocky Hill and taking part in community life, see the "Associate Membership" on the Policies tab.
